I’m sure they still love each other. I mean, throughout the book Katniss can’t decide if she’d prefer to be with Gale or not. At some points she says that she would. I think, though, that she always loved Peeta, the boy with the bread, the boy who saved her from starvation and gave her the little extra push to keep going and support her family. I think the appeal of Gale was only that that’s what Katniss thought she would have had if she hadn’t been in the Games. But the fact is that she was in the Games, and that changed her. Peeta really did care for Katniss, and Katniss for Peeta. I think it’s just that Peeta is more of a romantic. In interviews, he’s the more likable one, the one who has a way with words and a persuasive personality. Katniss is more of a fighter. She does what she has to do to survive, and she’s never really needed to be especially likable. They were both torn apart, Katniss had lost her sister, her mother didn’t live with her, and Peeta had lost his entire family. They were screwed up after that, who wouldn’t be? But I don’t think that they settled. I think they picked the person who they could depend on and love through what was going to be a hard road ahead.
